Requirements

  1. Reading assignments and class participation (10 %)
  2. Short Papers (30%). By the end of the second week of class you will be asked to choose topics and to establish your own deadlines for two short (4 page) papers. One paper must be completed before the midterm, and one after. A list of topics will be provided.
  3. Mid-term exam (20%). You will be given a list of essay questions to prepare in advance. The test will consist of one or more of these questions plus short answer questions.
  4. Research Paper (40%). This is the most important requirement of this course. Your progress will be evaluated (ie. graded!) at three different stages:
    • A one page summary of your topic along with a list of sources will be due October 8 (10 points).
    • A first draft of your paper will be due November 14 (30 points).
    • I will return your first draft with comments and suggestions and you will be responsible for preparing a final draft of the paper, due December 20 (60 points).
